Moving Tips!
Moving across country or even across town can be very stressful. Here are some tips that might prove helpful in this situation.
GENERAL GUIDELINES
- Move on a weekday if you can, when banks, utilities and government offices are open
- Order preprinted address labels with your new address as soon as you know it. It makes those change-of-address process much easier and faster!
- Keep a utility log to check service-transfer dates. If you're moving locally, leave the power and water on at your old address a few extra days so you can go back and clean up after your move.
- Choose a "packing room" ahead of time and box up a few things each day.
- To save time, rent a carpet shampooer at the same time you rent your truck
- Mark each box with its contents and destination room. That way, you and your helpers will know where each box belongs at your new home.
- If moving locally, you may want to leave your pets with a friend during moving day. Animals can become confused and frightened during a move.
- Remember to allow for extra braking room if you are driving the moving van. Anticipate stops and allow a 3-second gap between you and the vehicle in front of you.
- If you are in a moving van, such as a U-Haul, watch out for drive-thru restaurant and motel over-hangs...CLEARANCE!!!
PACKING TIPS
- There are so many different types of boxes available, such as electronic boxes, clothing boxes or just the normal packing boxes. evaluate your needs for what boxes you will need to ensure safe transportation.
- PACKING YOUR BOXES (TIPS)
- Group items of similar size and weight. Try not to mix belongings from different rooms of your home. First, pour a layer of packing peanuts into the bottom of the box. Wrap heaviest items first with bubble wrap or packing paper and place them in the bottom of the box.
- Wrap additional, lighter items with bubble wrap or packing paper and separate them from items in the bottom of the box with cushion foam. Place heavier items ont he bottom and lighter items on top.
- Before closing your box, cushion the entire package using packing peanuts or crumpled packing paper stuffed firmly into unfilled spaces to prevent shifting and damage to your goods. Your filled box should not weight more than about 30 pounds, or that which you can lift easily. Under packed boxes may collapse in transit, while over packed boxes can rupture, damaging belongings.
- Close the box and seal it with sturdy packing tape. Label the box with its contents and destination room.
- IN THE TRUCK (TIPS)
- Tier your load by placing the heaviest pieces in a row across the floor of the van and building a second and third row on top of the first and so on, until they reach the ceiling. Then start on the next tier. Household items are never identical in weight, shape or size and packing for a tight, evenly distributed load is key to ensuring that all belongings arrive undamaged. The pros use pads to ensure that they meet this goal; to fill a space, to level a tier or to give support to a curved or i

APPLIANCES
According to the NAHB study you can expect your gas range to last 15 years; clothes dryers and refrigerators should last about 13; microwave ovens and dishwashers 9; and trash compactors about 6 years.
Keeping appliances clean will help them operate more efficiently. Keeping your refrigerator's coils and door gasket clean will make for a better seal, cut down on energy loss and prevent wear and tear on the motor. When it comes to the dishwasher, the more you use it, the longer it is likely to operate. Infrequent use causes gaskets to dry out and results in leaks.
CONCRETE AND MASONRY
Masonry is one of the most durable components of a home. Chimneys, fireplaces and brick veneers can last a lifetime, and brick walls have an average life expectancy of more than 100 years.
You can extend the life of your fireplace and chimney by burning only seasoned, dry hardwood. Have a chimneysweep inspect it once annually or after burning a cord of wood, whichever comes first. Seal brick, concrete and masonry with a high-quality concrete and masonry sealerKS
The life expectancy of a wooden deck can vary dramatically depending upon many factors such as climate, sun exposure, deck construction and finish. According to the NAHB study, a deck has a life expectancy of about 20 years under ideal conditions.
There are a few very common mistakes that people make when it comes to building and maintaining a deck. First, the lowest portion of the deck framing should be no less than 20 centimeters from the soil to prevent rot and pest damage. Deck boards should never be face nailed or screwed to the framing as this tears the wood fibre and acts as an entrance source for water to damage both the decking and framing. Using a hidden deck fastener from below will prevent this condition. Keep the deck clean and add a new coat of finish every three to five years.
DOORS
Although the NAHB study finds that exterior fibreglass, steel and wood doors will last as long as the house, fibreglass is the most stable and won't expand and contract like steel or crack like wood.
Whatever the material, the best step that you can take to maintain an exterior door
